Press Release: Stewardship of Nonpartisan Housing Finance Coalition to Transition to National Association of Affordable Housing Lenders
To date, the Underserved Mortgage Markets Coalition (UMMC), hosted by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, has led efforts to ensure GSEs are serving affordable housing needs.
(June 23, 2025, Washington, DC) The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and the National Association of Affordable Housing Lenders (NAAHL) are excited to announce that NAAHL will become the new convener of the Underserved Mortgage Markets Coalition (UMMC).
“Since 2021, UMMC has brought together the leading national voices representing underserved homeowners and renters to ensure that the GSEs are meeting their charge to serve all families and communities,” said George W. McCarthy, president and CEO of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. “Under the Lincoln Institute’s stewardship, UMMC has become a hub for developing policies and programs to ensure our housing finance system helps to create and preserve affordable housing, including housing in rural communities, manufactured housing, and rental housing everywhere.”
“We face a national affordable housing crisis for renters and homeowners, and UMMC will have an increasingly important role to play as policymakers rethink our housing finance system,” said Sarah Brundage, President and CEO of NAAHL. “Under NAAHL’s stewardship, UMMC will continue to serve as the leading nonpartisan coalition, grounded in mission-driven policy and practitioner expertise, engaging policymakers and industry partners on the critical role that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac play in creating housing finance opportunities for American families, especially those not traditionally served by the private market.”
UMMC consists of 41 leading US affordable housing organizations. For questions about UMMC, please contact mcheney@naahl.org.

About the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy
The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy seeks to improve quality of life through the effective use, taxation, and stewardship of land. A nonprofit, private operating foundation whose origins date to 1946, the Lincoln Institute researches and recommends creative approaches to land as a solution to economic, social, and environmental challenges. Through education, training, publications, and events, we integrate theory and practice to inform public policy decisions worldwide. We organize our work around three impact areas: land and water; land and fiscal systems; and land and communities. We envision a world where cities and regions prosper and benefit from coordinated land use planning and public finance; where communities thrive from efficient and equitable allocation of limited land resources; and where stewardship of land and water resources ensures a livable future. We work globally, with locations in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Washington, DC; Phoenix, Arizona; and Beijing, China.
